The 1760s, at the beginning of George III's reign, marked a turning point for British art, with the triumphant rise of Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), as well as the founding of the Royal Academy of Arts, of which Reynolds was the first president. Known as the portrait masters, Reynolds and Gainsborough competed to elevate the genre to new levels of visual and intellectual innovation.
