This brooch is inspired by the mosaic in the Casa Milà, popularly known as La Pedrera ("quarry" in Catalan).
Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) was a Spanish architect, the most famous representative of Catalan modernism.
Gaudi's work, revolutionary in its time, featured plant and animal elements using the Trencadis technique.
Trencadis is a type of mosaic based on ceramic fragments, typical of Catalan modernist architecture. The suggestion of a coherent design and the abrupt transition to a chaotic design characterise Trencadis. This technique, also known as "the picket fence", allowed Gaudi to adapt to all types of surfaces and all types of constructions. He first used it on the Güell estate in Barcelona between 1883 and 1887.
