In April 1893, Henri-Edmond Cross, who had been living in the South of France for two years, received a letter in which his friend, the painter Paul Signac, suggested: "Why, since we both love and know this sunny country, shouldn't we try to build a decorative monument for it together?
For Signac, this monument became "Au Temps d'harmonie" and was placed in the Montreuil town hall, for Cross it was "The Evening air".
The painter chose to represent a late afternoon, when heat and light are calming down. Everything in his work expresses the fullness of the moment represented: the softness of the colours of the setting sun, the harmonious composition where horizontals and verticals balance each other, the figures with attitudes suspended in time.
