Poster The Magpie by Claude Monet
Claude Monet (1840 - 1926)
This poster is the reproduction of The Magpie, painted around 1868-1869 by Claude Monet (1840-1926) and exhibited at the Orsay museum.
At first sight, this painting may be mistaken with a white quasi-monochrome. Snow entirely covers the simplest landscape: a field, a fence, bar trees, rooftops, and a sky made of several stripes of different whites punctuated by darker accents resembling calligraphy.
The magpie, which gives the painting its name, is a discreet yet fundamental element in the figuration.
The bird sitting on the left-hand side fence is a hinge between front and back, earth and sky. Its feathers sum up the contrast between the global light and the absence of light, between the white, reflexion of all colours, and the black, which absorbs all the rays of light.
