Girodet facing Géricault or The Romantic Battle of the 1819 Salon - Exhibition catalogue
At the 1819 Salon exhibition, Girodet's Pygmalion and Galatea, emblem of the neoclassical school's aesthetics, and Géricault's Raft of the Medusa, flagship of an aesthetic avant-garde, compete against each other. The duel was at the heart of the romantic battle that emerged at the time and which would animate the following Salons. It is this major event in the French art scene that the dedicated exhibition and catalogue proposes to commemorate around the famous figures of these two artists.
The book offers a panorama of the richness and diversity of post-revolutionary French art - neoclassicism, romanticism, anacreontism, orientalism, landscape autonomy, renewal of religious painting - but also technical innovations such as lithography. The relationship between political powers and artists, as well as the development and importance of criticism, is detailed to provide an accurate picture of what this historical moment was like.
