This modern work illustrating Maternity as universal symbol comes at the very beginning of Chana Orloff's career as a sculptor.
Chana Orloff (1888-1968) arrives in Paris in 1910. She settles at Falguière and fits in with the colony of avant-garde artists of the Montparnasse quarter. Her neighbours are Brancusi and Modigliani, two fellow sculptors who will have a certain influence in her formation.
Chana Orloff created this "Maternity" in 1914; it is one her first significant works. It illustrates the artist's particular style: the lengthened and stylized shapes, a bare brushwork and a fine and gracious approach to detail. This mother, slightly arched under the weight of the child she holds on her crossed arms and the face turned towards the small head huddled up against her neck, radiates infinite tenderness and softness.
