This Virgin, one of his masterpieces, was donated to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg in 1893 by an English collector, Sir Charles Robinson, from whom other paintings (from various schools) had also been purchased. There have been many questions about the person who lent his face to the Virgin here. Some have considered that it would be the painter's companion, of Moriscan origin, whose features can be found in most of the Greco's saints' characters.
