Like a visit to a cabinet of curiosities, this catalogue shows extraordinary works of art from the collections of the 14 Dresden art museums.
This selection of some one hundred singular and remarkable objects from the 16th to the 21st century highlights the various links between Europe and the rest of the world. Indeed, the unique collections of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden are an excellent demonstration of the role of art in the dialogue between cultures. A strong interest in rare and exotic materials, in everyday or ritual objects from other cultures, or in valuable pieces from distant countries, has formed the basis for collecting activities throughout Europe.
Every prestigious collection - whether of art, nature or science - is born of the desire to know the world in all its facets and particularities, to demonstrate both the richness and the power of the treasures acquired.
of the desire to know the world in all its facets and particularities, to demonstrate both the wealth and the power of the treasures acquired.
A book of great iconographic variety that makes us dream and admire these collections while following the history of world trade.
