A remarkable colourist long appreciated for his Fêtes galantes, Monticelli grasped at the end of his life a new and powerful and expressive way of painting that was to influence one of the most famous painters in history: Vincent Van Gogh.
Showing great admiration for the Provençal painter, for this "flower crusher" who was also appreciated by Cézanne, Van Gogh built up a collection of Monticelli's paintings through the dealer Alexandre Reid, and also went to Provence, in the footsteps of the Marseilles artist, where he painted some of his most famous works.
This book, which juxtaposes landscapes, still lifes and portraits of the two artists, allows us to understand how the late work of the painter from Marseille was able to shape the genius of one of the most famous painters in the world.
