WRITTEN IN FRENCH

Rediscovered almost 20 years ago, thanks to the superb exhibition at the Center Pompidou, Jean Hélion is once again the subject of an exceptional retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris. A major figure in abstraction in the 1920s and 1930s, Hélion returned to figuration and thus opposed the vogue of his time. From 1930, Jean Hélion (1904-1987) established himself in the history of modern art by founding in 1930 - with Théo van Doesburg, Otto Carlsund and Léon Tutundjian - the first French avant-garde dedicated to radically abstract art , it will be the Concrete Art Group, which subsequently becomes Abstraction-Création. His work, his convictions and his aura transcend borders: in England, he participated in the creation of the magazine Axis; in the United States, his workshop became an essential place for European modern movements. However, Hélion moved away from abstract dogmatism and gradually reintroduced everyday elements into his painting, with the project of infusing his figures with an allegorical meaning.

Beaux Arts Éditions looks back on the atypical career of this artist and provides keys to understanding his work, while establishing the artistic and political context in which he evolves, in order to measure the full scope of his work.
