Beaux Arts Special Edition / En jeu ! Artists and Sport (1870-1930) - Musée Marmottan Monet

MX025656
  • € 12
On the occasion of the Olympic Games, the Marmottan Monet museum questions the relationship of artists to sport, its representation from Impressionism to Cubism. Indeed, sport, by asserting itself as one of the components of modernism, appears in most currents of modern and contemporary art. Sport "reshapes" the body, invents a new aesthetic of gesture and contributes to the creation of the "new man". Sport thus participates in a certain way in major artistic innovations and has renewed the way we look at the body and at society. The exhibition, thanks to exceptional loans, shows how, at the turn of the century, sport underwent a series of changes of which the artists took the full measure. Of aristocratic and English origin in the 19th century , the sport became democratized and became a mass leisure activity. The exhibition also aims to understand the ethical issues and aesthetic modalities of the way sports are viewed by all the great artists Monet, Degas, Caillebotte, Rodin, Delaunay, Metzinger and Gromaire.

Beaux Arts Éditions looks back at the origins of sport, its democratization, and shows how artists have seized the heroic figure of the athlete to make him one of the symbols of modernity.
