Woman in Red is one of Soutine's most successful portraits. Seated in an armchair with curved back and armrests, against a green background, the disarticulated body of a woman follows the curves of the seat.
Through his expressiveness and materialism, he thus translates a tragic vision of humanity that he shares with his admired masters Rembrandt and Goya.
