Emperor of the French since the senatus-consulte of 18 May 1804 establishing the Empire, Napoleon I wanted an official coronation ceremony, in order to inscribe the Napoleonic dynasty in the lineage of the great imperial and royal dynasties of France and Europe, in particular that of Charlemagne. This took place on 2 December 1804 in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, in the presence of Pope Pius VII.
