The Chalcographie du Louvre is an institution created in 1797 and comprises a collection of engraved copper plates attached to the Musée du Louvre, a collection of prints, and a workshop for printing prints from these plates. The word chalcographie comes from the Greek and means "writing on copper"; it refers to the art of engraving on copper or other metal supports and, by extension, to the place where engraved plates are kept. The Réunion des musées nationaux (RMN) is responsible for printing, publishing, distributing and marketing the Louvre's prints.

The Chalcographie du Louvre now contains more than 13,000 engraved plates and continues to be enriched by commissions from major contemporary artists. These prints are rarely shown to the public, and to see them brought together in a volume of some fifty of the most prestigious is therefore an event. The present collection brings together works by Louise Bourgeois, Eva Jospin, Pierre Alechinsky, Georg Baselitz, J.R., Annette Messager, François Morellet...
