Paris and London are today two globalized cities whose diversity is an integral part of their identity. The catalogue explores how cultural and artistic scenes, in particular musical scenes, have been stimulated, irrigated and enriched by the various postcolonial migrations in these two metropolitan areas.
Although they have distinct urban developments, Paris and London have comparable migration histories from 1962 to 1989. Between singularities, parallel journeys, crossed glances and meeting points, the catalogue retraces the history of this particularly fertile multicultural mix while placing it in its political and economic context.
Through some sixty short texts (testimonies, interviews, work descriptions, etc.) and a rich variety of illustrations (period photographs, record covers, posters, etc.), the catalogue shows how music has been a privileged means of expression for entire generations to make their voices heard and claim their place in these two former capitals of the colonial empire, thus contributing to their metamorphosis into international capitals.
