Japanese landscapes, from Hokusai to Hasui - Exhibition catalogue

EP196434
  • € 13.50
Written in French.

The heyday of the landscape motif in printmaking developed in Japan at the beginning of the 19th century, when travel became one of the favourite pastimes of the Japanese. Initially devoted to visiting famous temples, shrines and gardens in the Edo region, travel extended to more distant lands for the wealthier people, thanks to the contemporary success of tour guides.

The painters seized this new enthusiasm, giving rise to the development and success of landscape prints, which had the advantage of being an unforgettable souvenir, easy to transport and inexpensive, equivalent to what postcards would be with the invention of photography. The sanctuary of Ise, the road to Tokaido, Nara or Mount Fuji became destinations, and therefore, famous motifs.

Exhibition at the Musée national des arts asiatiques from June 21st 2017 to October 2nd 2017
