The gestation period for elephants varies from 18 to 22 months and a female elephant can only give birth to one calf at a time, but the calf weighs around 100 kilos! The calf quickly becomes autonomous and learns to follow its mother quickly. To feed itself, it suckles, with its mouth and not its trunk, until it is two years old, however it is as early as three months old that it starts to eat plants! If the females spend their lives within their family of origin, the males leave the group at the age of 10 years. 7 x 5 x 3 cm PAPO
