Hokusai - Journey to the Foot of Mount Fuji revisits two major themes in the work of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) through a selection of one hundred and twenty-six prints from the Georges Leskowicz collection.
Hokusai, through his incessant research and bold creativity, renewed the codes of the traditional landscape motif in Japan. His work also bears witness to the development of travel in the archipelago during the Edo period (1603-1868), particularly along the Tōkaidō route, an artistic subject in its own right.
The six essays in this catalogue trace the evolution of landscape in Hokusai's work, the fortunes of works such as the Manga and The Great Wave since the 19th century, and the influence of the master on contemporary creations.
