Boudin, Renoir, Monet, Courbet are all artists highlighted in this exceptional book which presents their works as well as their respective careers, through the press of the time, the artists' correspondence and their private diaries.
Jacques-Sylvain Klein first returns to the romantic and naturalist revolution between 1820 and 1850 (Turner, Isabey, Corot, Millet), then addresses the quest for light from the 1850s to 1870s with the representation of vacation spots on the Normandy coast by Boudin, Courbet, Monet or Jongkind (Etretat, Fécamp, Honfleur, Trouville...) and finally "the impressionist surge" (1870-1900) with the first impressionist exhibitions by the masters Monet, Pissarro and Gauguin, and the famous series by Monet (Meules, Cathedrals) who tirelessly painted "Les Nymphéas" at the end of his life, the apotheosis of his work celebrating nature and opening new perspectives to painting at the beginning of the 20th century.
