In 20th century Japanese art, shin hanga refers to "new prints". Relatively unknown, they differ from traditional bowl prints in their modern visual language. Women, once idealized and stylized, are now drawn from real models whose emotions can be guessed.
The landscapes are impressionistic rather than realistic, and are characterised by a highly evocative colour range. These fascinating "new prints" also bear witness to an exceptional technical perfection, the result of collaboration between artists such as Goyi, Kotondo, Shinsul and Hasui, publishers, engravers and printers.
The selection of prints presented here, from two major private collections, is enriched by works from the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels and - an invaluable contribution from the family collection of the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, the man with whom it all began.
