Because behind the legend of the misunderstood and tormented artist stands a painter trained with Dutch masters, influenced by François Millet and Édouard Manet, who stayed in Antwerp, arrived in Paris to join his brother Theo, went to Arles to seek the dazzlement of color, passes through Saint-Rémy-de Provence, to finally experience a final period in Auvers-sur-Oise.
And it is through these different cities emblematic of his life and his artistic evolution that this work chooses to analyze the creative frenzy of a painter, whose legend, still vivid and misleading, still prevents us from knowing well today. .
A painter who testifies to an immense literary and artistic culture, works tirelessly, tackling all subjects, from still life to self-portrait to the incandescent landscapes of Provence, dotted with luminous sunflowers, almond trees in flower and silver olive trees. Without forgetting his last months in Auvers-sur-Oise, a period marked by a true artistic renewal and the production of some of his greatest masterpieces.
In a little less than ten years of intense and determined activity, Van Gogh, although nothing predestined him to become a painter - he who wanted, like his father, to become a pastor - left nearly nine hundred paintings and a correspondence of an incredible wealth, and stands out as one of the major figures of post-impressionism, one of the precursors of modern art.
