For a few weeks, during the French Presidency of the European Union, Anselm Kiefer will recreate his studio in the brand new Grand Palais. In this prestigious and monumental setting, he will present an original installation of works created during the year 2020, marked by the global pandemic, which will be linked to those of the poet Paul Celan (1920-1970).
Of Romanian origin, Celan was a victim of the state anti-Semitism of the 1930s, before making Paris his permanent home after the Second World War. The lyrical breath that inhabits his poems, haunted by annihilation and memory, left its mark on the young Kiefer: "A Nothing, / that is what we were, are / and will remain, blooming / the Rose of Nothingness, the / Rose of Nobody."

Conceived as an immersive journey into Anselm Kiefer's studio and world, this artist's book recounts Kiefer's longstanding dialogue with his master poet, to which the philosopher Emanuele Coccia, the artist Edmund de Waal, the curator Ulrich Wilmes, and the filmmaker Alexander Kluge offer fresh and illuminating insights into the very idea of Europe, its past and its future.
