Entirely needle-embroidered in coloured woollen threads, the Bayeux Tapestry tells the story of Duke William of Normandy's conquest of the kingdom of England in 1066 over a length of nearly 70 metres. Remarkably well preserved, this masterpiece from the Middle Ages still holds many riddles today, here posed and debated by two experts.
Beyond a memorable page of history, the Tapestry appears as a precious window open on the material realities of the medieval period: war with its ships, armour and weapons; but also, the daily way of life through architecture, clothing, food, carpentry, cooking or even pets. It is also a formidable mirror of the collective imagination of the time through the multitude of scenes with secular or religious iconography that embellish it. The messages it delivers are universal in scope. From whatever angle it is contemplated and interpreted, it continues - and will continue for a long time - to fascinate and seduce.
