The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon is joining in the celebration of the bicentenary of the deciphering of the hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion, in 1822, through the scientific and friendly relationship that the first director of the Musée de Lyon, François Artaud (1767-1838), and Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832) maintained for more than twenty years. At a time when hieroglyphic inscriptions were scarce in collections, Artaud worked to provide Champollion with original texts, an indispensable source for understanding the writing of the ancient Egyptians. He also played an important role in his contacts with the world of collectors and major dealers in Egyptian antiquities, notably the famous Bernardino Drovetti. The exhibition will present Artaud's role throughout the life of Jean-François Champollion and will emphasise the importance of ancient Egypt in Lyon from the 17th century onwards.
