Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts, the famous Szépmuvészeti Múzeum, stands out for the richness of its collection and the originality of its history, which dates back to the 19th century. The public authorities of the time wanted to endow the Hungarian capital with an institution that could offer the very best in national and European art. The idea of a Fine Arts Museum took shape in 1871, when the state acquired some six hundred masterpieces from the Princes Esterhazy collection. As the collections grew, the Hungarian National Gallery was created in 1957 to bring together Hungarian art. After years of separation, the two institutions are now reunited under the same banner, renewing the thread of their shared history.
On the occasion of the closure of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts for an ambitious renovation and extension project, eighty paintings, drawings and sculptures by Dürer, Cranach, Greco, Goya, Manet, Gauguin and Kokoschka, among others, are brought together at the Musée du Luxembourg, along with a dozen emblematic works of Hungarian art, notably by Munkacsy, Ferenczy and Rippl-Rónai, offering an unexpected perspective on European art.
The exhibition album Masterpieces from Budapest, Dürer, Greco, Tiepolo, Manet, Rippl-Rónai... is also available in digital format. It features a larger number of works and a chronological text, in a design entirely redesigned for tablet reading.
