The work Formes de la ruine aims to establish a dialogue between all types of ruins. It investigates both the centuries-old traditions, which have enabled the appearance of a culture of monumental ruins that has become dominant in the West and the East, as well as those of societies which are unaware of even the notion of monument.
All forms of ruin practices are called upon, whether it involves the collection of fragments of human activities on and in the ground, the development of natural spaces for memorial or religious purposes, or even the construction of buildings such as megaliths, pyramids and works of art of great empires.
The various experiences of ruin are highlighted, from the recovery of buildings of the past, so dear to the Egyptians, the Mesopotamians or the Americans, to the Chinese and the Japanese who partly refused the monumental cult so prized by their contemporaries of Asia, Europe and America. The study of the memory practices of Indians, Africans and Oceanians shows that they favor a sort of pact with Nature rather than subjection to grandiose and sometimes even megalomaniac architectures.
Thus, the work offers a sort of journey from ruins, through civilizations and history, to our contemporary industrial societies. It is enriched with an anthology and a "ruinier" of 75 entries (places, artists, theorists, concepts).
