From the Gregorian chants to the lyrical flights of Milton Nascimento, from the batuques of former slaves to the baterias of samba schools, from the intimate atmosphere of bossa nova to the exuberance of the Tropicalism of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa or the electronic experiments of Marcelo D2, Brazilian music is a reflection of the country's diversity: mixed-race and syncopated.
It punctuates the lives of Brazilians: festive at carnival time, it is sad and revolted when it comes to denouncing inequalities and misery, oppression and dictatorship. A true collective adventure on the scale of a nation, a ferment of national identity, Brazilian music has taken part in all the political and social changes that have created the Brazil of today.
