From the first Olympic Games in Athens 1896 to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris 2024
The absolute reference over 130 years of Olympic history
This reference work on the 30 Summer Olympic Games, from 1896 to 2024, pays tribute to the athletes through more than a thousand exceptional images. Around sixty specialists, French and international, offer a complete overview of each of the Olympics and offer a resolutely transnational "world history" of the modern Olympics. During these 130 years of Olympic Games, major changes in our societies and their political, economic and cultural issues have taken shape.
This catalog of the exhibition presented at the Palais de la Porte Dorée from April to September 2024 traces the construction of nation states, the emergence of mass culture, the interwar period marked by the opposition between totalitarianism and democracy, the Cold War, waves of decolonization or even the demands of minorities and emerging countries. It also evokes economic globalization and the gigantism of today's Olympic Games, the recognition of Paralympism, without forgetting to address the ethical and societal questions that run through the Olympic movement in the 21st century.
