Between the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XVI, Versailles and then Paris competed for the title of fashion capital. Between the desire for seduction, the affirmation of power and the desire to signify social status, fashion and beauty accessories under the Ancien Régime supported a new way of presenting oneself. Each adornment, each gesture, each attitude responds to codes that continue to evolve and thus accompany fashions and mores. The body was adorned with various devices that competed for audacity and distinction. What roles do these ornaments play in the context of the court?
The exhibition at the Musée du Domaine royal de Marly traces the uses of these objects from head to toe: headdresses, wigs, make-up, perfumes, clothing ornaments, jewellery, objects of gallantry, shoes.
