A multidisciplinary and contemporary vision of a traditional practice through painting, music, literature and cinema, nourished by a spectacular iconography.
Substances labeled "hallucinogenic" by Western medicine occupy a central place in many indigenous societies in the Americas. Used in shamanic practices and initiation rites, these substances play a leading role in artistic creation and have enjoyed a significant transnational diffusion since the second half of the twentieth century.
Traditionally used by the peoples of the Peruvian Amazon, ayahuasca is a psychotropic beverage whose use has recently become global, thanks in particular to the influence of the writers of the Beat Generation in the United States. This book proposes to understand the iconographic productions inspired by ayahuasca in the light of their social uses and their dynamics of intercultural circulation.
The authors thus question the phenomenon of shamanic tourism and the emergence of an indigenous visionary art that is now integrated into the international art market.
