The work and its artist

Diego Velázquez (1599-1660)

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez is a Spanish Baroque painter. He is particularly known for his naturalistic paintings, and his mastery of the chiaroscuro technique. As a court painter, he has produced numerous portraits of the Spanish royal family, court people and decorative paintings for royal apartments over the course of his career. His most famous works are Les Menines (Las Meninas) and Les Fileuses (Las Hilanderas).
