On 2 June 1861, the Asmodée docked in Toulon, with a delegation of three ambassadors and their retinue on board, who had come to present the letters of the kings of Siam to the Emperor Napoleon III: the ceremony was scheduled for 27 June at the Château de Fontainebleau.
The author comments, with the help of testimonies from the period, on the idea that the France of the Second Empire had of itself and of the "Other", based on the foundations of a young anthropological science that had been exhilarated by colonial conquests. We also read, in the context of the sumptuous reception of the ambassadors by the imperial family at Fontainebleau, the political stakes and international tensions of the time, which would erupt in conflicts in Europe and around the world.
