Dialogue between two collections of photographs, one private - that of Marin Karmitz -, the other public - that of the Center Pompidou -, through the prism of human representation. If we know the man for his passionate relationship with the moving image, producer and founder of the MK2 cinemas, we know less that Marin Karmitz was a photographer at the time of his militant political commitment and that he brought together, alongside an exceptional collection of works of art, a very beautiful photographic collection. He has been collecting this collection for around thirty years. Marin Karmitz is a child of the century, himself a victim of the uprooting caused by the Shoah and the division of Europe into two blocs. His commitments mark the spirit of his collection, dominated by black and white, where the human figure is very present; she is resolutely personal and demanding.
Beaux Arts Éditions accompanies the exhibition and provides a history of the photographed body of the 19th and 20th centuries , while providing keys to the different movements and artists who make up the two collections.
