We sometimes forget that the largest film producer in the world is not located on the West Coast of the United States but in Bombay, hence the name "Bollywood". In India, cinema is much more than an art or an industry, it is a culture, an art of living, it is an integral part of the lives of many Indians, who identify with the actors (heroes) and the values that they broadcast. The Quai Branly exhibition will therefore reveal to a Western public an unknown world, rich in millennia-old artistic traditions, endowed with a mythology as complex as that of the Greeks, a production of songs and dances, drawing on hundreds of southern stories. -Asian; a world dominated by superstars, heroes adored by an entire continent. Going back to the beginnings of this cinematographic adventure, the exhibition also focuses on the way in which the pioneers of Indian cinema used the first image distribution technologies, such as lithography and photography. Visitors to the exhibition, which features extracts from films, posters, photos and favorite objects, will be amazed by the diversity of Indian production.
Beaux Arts Éditions looks back on the fabulous history of this cinema and deciphers its codes and heroes.
