Vasarely is Op Art, the vibrations and flashes of shapes and colours.
But this Vasarely was preceded, in the decade following the war, by another Vasarely. Devoting himself fully to art, after a successful career as a graphic designer in the 1930s, Vasarely, with the help of the Denise René gallery, took his place on the French abstraction scene within the Nouvelle École de Paris.
It is this moment that "Vasarely avant l'op" looks at, in a dialogue with artists with whom he was associated at the time:
Auguste Herbin, Alberto Magnelli, Gérard Schneider, André Bloc, César Domela, Serge Poliakoff, Hans Hartung, Ideo Pantaleoni, Nicolaas Warb, Richard Mortensen, Émile Gilioli, Jean Deyrolle, Berto Lardera, Robert Jacobsen, Edgar Pillet, Jean-Michel Atlan, Alicia Penalba, Pablo Palozuelo, Pierre Soulages, Jean Dewasne, Simone Boisecq, Marta Pan, Robert Breer, Agam and Geneviève Claisse.
The exhibition takes place in Aix-en-Provence at the Vasarely Foundation from June 17 to October 15, 2023.
