"The Masai ornaments bear witness to the incessant cultural crossroads between Europe and Africa".
Few are aware that these effects are actually the result of a long-standing cultural encounter between Africa and Europe. The colourful glass beads of the Maasai come straight from the Czech Republic.
Glass beads arrived in Africa in the first millennium BC via the trans-Saharan and maritime routes. Produced in India, these beads were extremely expensive and were only used by non-Masai royal families. Then, from 1480 onwards, the massive export of pearls from Europe to East Africa took place from Venice and Murano, Italy, as well as from the Bohemian region in the Netherlands. Until the end of the 19th century, these pearls were considered a currency of exchange.
Création Nature has been working since 1995 in partnership with Kenyan craft workshops. This partnership was built with the idea that development should be shared and built on trust and duration. It is part of a sustainable and fair development approach. Our presence in Kenya allows us to be available for the craftsmen, to display and adjust their orders, to be more efficient in the production of models and quality follow-up.
