This book is published on the occasion of the restoration of the King's Private Chamber inner flat, which began on 11 March 2019.
Initially a "collector's flat" for Louis XIV, the King's Private Chamber was transformed by Louis XV who, appreciating its intimacy, made it his workplace. Restored to the taste of the reign, the cabinet then benefited from a sumptuous rocaille decoration and the most refined furniture.
Jacques Verberckt's glass borders and woodwork depicting children's games, elegant bronzes and delicate marquetry, Antoine Robert Gaudreaus' commode and medallion cabinet, and Gilles Joubert's corner pieces make up one of the most beautiful ensembles of French decorative art that can still be admired in situ.
A key piece of furniture, the famous cylindrical desk designed by Jean-François OEben and completed by Jean Henri Riesener in 1769 is undergoing a special restoration, entrusted to the care of the Centre de recherches et de restauration des musées de France.
Also on display in the King's Private Chamber is the rich American Independence candelabra, commissioned by Louis XVI, by Pierre Philippe Thomire, installed in 1785.
