WRITTEN IN FRENCH
What is a duel? Literature and popular culture give it pride of place but often give it an overly simplistic image.
Almost universal, this ceremonial, which responds to explicit or implicit rules, is found in very diverse forms, depending on the place and time.
In the light of texts by the best specialists and illustrated with nearly two hundred objects, weapons, ancient manuscripts, contemporary photographs, costumes, archival documents, engravings and paintings, the book Duels, the art of combat offers to explain what differentiates the duel from a simple confrontation, to reveal its specificity, but also to show how reality and fiction have mutually influenced each other to permanently anchor this phenomenon in the imagination.
Five contemporary illustrators offer this book their vision of the great duels of history through unpublished works.
Exhibition "Duels. The art of combat" at the Army Museum from April 24 to August 18, 2024.
