Gardens of Asia

Driven by an essential quest for harmony to become "one with the sky", the art of the garden in Asia proceeds from a spectacular and idealised creation of nature. From the gardens of Mughal India to Japan and China, each of these countries made a particularly significant and original contribution to this art form, which the exhibition proposes to explore through an anthology of eighty works from the museum's collections (Indian miniatures, prints, photographs, textiles and ceramics). From Lahore to Kyoto, princely or imperial gardens, Buddhist temple gardens, Confucian scholar's gardens, tea gardens, gardens dreamed up by poets, there is no shortage of typological and aesthetic distinctions. Climatic imperatives, cultural singularities and historical developments are all elements that invite a comparative approach to Asian gardens. It is divided into three essential themes of the garden in Asia.
