Embroidery of Byzantine tradition in Romania from the 15th to the 17th century

As part of the France-Romania Season 2019 and on the occasion of Romania's emblematic loan of the Banner of Saint George of Prince Stephen the Great, the exhibition aims to highlight the exceptional character of the Romanian collections of religious embroideries of Byzantine and post-Byzantine tradition, a jewel of Romanian and universal heritage. Around the masterpiece presented by Stephen the Great (1457-1504) to the monastery of Zographou on Mount Athos, recovered by a detachment of the French army during the First World War and solemnly handed over by France to the Romanian State in 1917, some thirty outstanding works will illustrate the extraordinary development of embroidery in the Byzantine tradition in Romania from the mid-15th to the mid-17th centuries.
