Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)
Self-portrait, 1887
Vincent moved to Paris in 1886, after hearing about the new colorful style of French painting from his brother Theo. Without wasting any time, he tried his hand at it in several self-portraits. He did this mainly to avoid having to pay a model. Using rhythmic brushstrokes and bright colors, he portrays himself as a fashionably dressed Parisian.
