Claude Gillot. Comedies, fables & arabesques

21 March 2024 23 June 2024
The Magnin national museum is hosting the Claude Gillot temporary exhibition from March 21 to June 23. Comedies, fables & arabesques . Master of Antoine Watteau, draftsman and engraver of the last years of the Grand Siècle, Claude Gillot (1673-1722) owes his reputation to the fantasy and originality of his works, prefiguring the freedom of tone and morals of the Regency ( 1715-1723). Parodies, scenes of witchcraft, farces and fair theater made him an artist of satire, comedy and the performing arts. At the heart of his work, a rich graphic corpus shows his taste for the Comédie-Italienne, with its pantomimes, its acrobats and its disguised figures. Costume designer and decorator for the Opera from 1712, Gillot was also an ornamental designer with Claude III Audran (1658-1734) for private interiors. This exhibition brings together around a hundred works (paintings, drawings and prints) to retrace his career. In addition to the numerous loans from the Louvre Museum, there are generous contributions from the Langres Museum of Art and History, the Beaux-Arts de Paris, the National Library of France, the Royal Library of Belgium, the Musée des Beaux -Arts of Valenciennes, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, the Jacquemart-André museum in Paris, and private collectors. Conceived and initially scheduled from November 9 to February 26, 2024 at the Louvre Museum, the exhibition had to close its doors on November 11. It is a great pleasure for the Magnin national museum to be able to give a second life to this project and to welcome the works of this artist. Exhibition organized by the Magnin national museum, Dijon, GrandPalaisRmn, Paris on an original project from the Louvre museum and with its exceptional assistance.
