The work and its artist

Jan Brueghel l'Ancien dit de Velours (1568-1625)

Master of 17th century Flemish Baroque painting, Jan Brueghel the Elder is also called Brueghel de Velours in reference to his virtuosity in the realization of fades and gradations. The artist is known for his paintings of flowers but also for his biblical or mythological compositions. His painting is a splendid example of the transition from 16th century Mannerism to Baroque, it uses chiaroscuro and very meticulously showing the artist's taste for naturalism. As a renowned painter with an excellent reputation he had the chance to work with the best artists of his time such as Rubens.
