Bruegel the Elder is the point of convergence of medieval mystery and Renaissance humanism, a man open to exchanges between North and South, in a time of political, religious and philosophical turmoil. Confronted with these trends through his apprenticeship and a trip to Italy, the artist developed a personal vision and style, which Philippe and Françoise Roberts-Jones strive to restore in all their richness and diversity. Indeed, if we know Bruegel's winter landscapes or his rustic scenes, his brushwork is far from being confined to these subjects. From The Fall of the Rebel Angels to The Magpie on the Gallows, via the Seasons of the Year, the painter displays all the facets of his genius. But his production is not limited to the forty or so paintings that remain. It also includes admirable drawings in which unbridled imagination and creativity are expressed - such as the Deadly Sins series; this work has managed to give them their rightful place. The engravings are also studied; they further reflect the tastes and trends of an era, through their mode of distribution. Despite his fame, Bruegel is rarely cited in written sources, and his life remains largely in the shadows. His work only takes on more importance, through which a profoundly humanist personality emerges, a being who is an observer of his contemporaries, but also of nature and the events of the time. Bruegel is a multiple work: rich in vision, feeling and intelligence, he presents a harvest of ideas, a harvest of images.
