Toudoum... Toudoum... Every morning, Sisanda begins by counting the beats of her heart and the number of days she has lived since her birth.
Then, she watches her mother slip out of the hut to go running in the hills: Maswala, her Mamantilope, runs for fun for hours, barefoot, where even shepherds do not go with their flocks.
Sisanda cannot run. Not jumping, not playing with others, not anything, because of his stupid little heart and his stupid illness. The doctor told her she was very lucky to still be alive. Very much. There is nothing he can do here, Sisanda would have to operate in a specialized hospital abroad. And it's expensive... A million kels! She calculated that it would take her parents thirty-eight years, three months and twenty days to raise that much money...
But all these calculations are distorted when she discovers that Maswala could earn the same amount by running as fast as an antelope...
