How to conceive a dictionary that is worthy of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)? Pierre Daix has taken up the challenge by gathering in more than 2,000 entries all that can be known about the places, friends, and loves that counted in Picasso's life, as well as the history of his important works and their exhibitions. It reviews his revisions of classical or archaic arts and Negro art, the achievements of his contemporaries, but also the techniques of painting, sculpture, engraving. He analyzes the relations that the artist maintained with all the great movements of the twentieth century - from the Fauvists to Cubism, Surrealism, and abstract art -, his problems with dealers - from Vollard to the Rosenbergs or Kahnweiler -, his ideas on art, politics, communism, and the false Picassos, as well as the misunderstandings caused by his humor.
This new edition is enriched with everything that has been published from Picasso's archives since 1995 (such as his application for French naturalization in 1940) and everything that has been revealed by international exhibitions and studies, which have shed light on the young Picasso's relationship with Derain, with Matisse, or even to rehabilitate his erotic works.
In short, all of Picasso!
