An exuberant portrait of Louis XIV accompanied by his family, The Royal Family in Olympus , by Jean Nocret, is among the most popular paintings at the Palace of Versailles. This brilliant composition, with shimmering colors, alone embodies the art of the French court in the 17th century, but its aura did not prevent its author from falling into anonymity. The first work devoted to Jean Nocret since 1886, this book, resulting from a real investigation in archives and public and private collections, gives substance to an unexpected and singular painter, who passed through Lorraine, Rome, Lisbon and Paris. Often spectacular, his works revive a forgotten patronage, that of Philippe d'Orléans known as "Monsieur", the only brother of the Sun King.
