Black and white, red, yellow or blue: primary or secondary, colours are everywhere, but, like works of art, we do not all perceive them in the same way!
Colour is, in essence, transdisciplinary. By addressing this theme, this album highlights the contribution of the arts to the understanding of the scientific foundations of colour, and vice versa.
With each double-page spread, the reader enters the world of an artist and his or her work, exploring the colour wheel, the essential optical principles and the chemical and physical nature of colours. They discover the main dyes, both natural and synthetic, and unravel the mysteries of the colours in their environment.
The delicate illustrations, which are sometimes set in a natural environment (forest, sea, ice floe), an everyday place (school, town) or an artistic place (workshop or museum), allow the child to find both familiar landmarks and to grasp new concepts through explanatory diagrams subtly integrated into the image (and thus thwarting any assimilation to a textbook!)
The short and rhythmic texts, while recontextualising the works discussed, provide simple and enlightening answers to sometimes complex scientific questions. The history and symbolism of colours are approached in a wide chronological, geographical and cultural field, from prehistory to pop art, from the North Pole to Polynesia.
