The work and its artist

Hubert Robert (1733-1808)

Hubert Robert is one of the emblematic figures of the general renewal of landscape painting in France during the second half of the 18th century. Spotted from an early age for his talents as a draughtsman, Hubert Robert perfected his art in Italy, at the Académie de France in Rome. He works with the painter Giovanni Paolo Panini, but also with Giovanni Battista Piranesi (commonly known as Piranesi). This artistic education was also an opportunity for the painter to make friends with Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Both share a common passion for picturesque subjects, where reality and imagination mix; a singularity that he will keep throughout his career.
