The Château de Fontainebleau has been the subject of a multitude of descriptions, drawings and engravings. Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, Israel Silvestre, Jacques Rigaud and Rodolphe Pfnor have immortalized the originality of its architecture and its decorations as well as the richness of its gardens and its fountains.
The royal house is the crucible and reflection of major artistic movements, where architects, painters and sculptors forged their art. Drawing is the expression of their thoughts.
Both subject and object, the castle witnessed major historical events, from the baptism of Louis XIII to the abdication of Napoleon I. He also lived to the rhythm of a brilliant court, animated by hunts, fireworks and even theatrical performances.
This work, rich in more than three hundred graphic works from the castle's collections, invites us to discover the multiple facets of the house of the centuries, through the vision of the artists who shaped, deciphered and dreamed it.
