Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)

Renoir is one of the main representatives of the impressionist movement whose paintings are composed of touches of colour, set in small commas, where black and line do not exist. During this period, he painted scenes from modern popular and social life, portraits, landscapes. From 1880, Renoir began to change the way he painted. He stands out from the impressionists; his style becomes more classical.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a major French painter of the Impressionist movement. Known for his bright, warm representation of Parisian life, landscapes, and above all feminine figures, he celebrated beauty, sensuality and joie de vivre through a light, vibrant touch.

Renoir masters the art of capturing light effects, fleeting moments and soft atmospheres, while giving his characters a bodily and lively presence.

" In reality, we don't know anything any more, we’re no longer sure of anything. When you look at the works of the elders, you don't really have to be clever. " Pierre-Auguste Renoir

These canvases show how Renoir's art developed towards a more classic style, with solid shapes and warm colours, especially in his final years.

Renoir left a vast body of work: more than 4,000 paintings. He has influenced generations of artists through his humanity, sensitivity to light, and love of the female body. Through his scenes of joy, Renoir succeeded in making painting an art of life, light and delight for the senses.
